My name is Joke Afolabi, founder of Cohcasel, As a working mother with the passion for excellence in my accounting career, I knew the importance of having a reliable nanny to help with some of the house chores.
Now, as an elderly parent and grand parent, i feel the pain of many elderly parents who have been denied the opportunities of enjoying the warmth and reaping the fruits of parenthood at old age due to the exodus of our young people outside the shores of Nigeria in search of greener pastures. The gap of loneliness and inadequate care has led many elderly parents to their early graves. The option of relocating them to Old People’s Home is not really a suitable alternative in our climes. The desire to proffer solutions in bridging the gaps in the family became a double-edged sword of creating employment opportunities for serious minded people who are willing and passionate about the COHCASEL dream of making families happy.

My mother became a widow at the age of forty-two years with six children, I am the fourth and the first girl child. I was faced with the task of caring for my younger ones and my eldest brother while our mother was fully engaged in the task of making ends meet through her business activities of shuttling markets from villages to towns and cities to earn a living to sustain the family. My caregiving skill was further sharpened by my aunt, a teacher who trained me in the art of Home Management ranging from nanny to housekeeping for over a decade. As a working mother with the passion for excellence in my accounting career (Chartered Accountant) with one of the leading Insurance Companies in Nigeria, the task of raising a family alongside became very daunting. All the attempts made to secure the services of a competent and reliable maid proved abortive. I had to bring to the fore my early childhood caregiving skills plus the support of my husband and my mother In-law. The children also learnt how to take care of themselves as they were growing without the services of any maid.
The current harsh economic situation in Nigeria has put a lot of financial pressure on young couples where both have to take up jobs that keep them away from home for more than 12 hours daily. The long absence from home in search of daily bread is creating an emotional gap in the family due to the trauma from the abuse by the criminally minded, incompetent, disgruntled nanny/housekeepers hired to support the family. Many elderly parents have also been denied the opportunities of enjoying the warmth and reaping the fruits of parenthood at old age due to the exodus of our young people outside the shores of Nigeria in search of greener pastures. The above scenario stimulated a very strong passion in my family to engage in the recruitment, training and development of human resources that will be compassionate, reliable and can work as a team plus excellent service delivery. The desire to proffer solutions in bridging the gaps in the family became a double-edged sword of creating employment opportunities for serious minded people who are willing and passionate about the COHCASEL dream of making families happy.
